In making a choice of translations, obscurity and stilted expression have been, so far as possible, avoided. Chapman is archaic, sometimes obscure, frequently forced and commonplace. Pope is rhetorical, artificial, insincere. Cowper seldom soars, and often drops to feebleness; and at times he ruins an otherwise noble rendering by a bombastic word or sentiment. Worsley's translation reaches a high poetic level, and has great literary merit; but the thought is entangled by intricate meter and rhyme, which make clear and direct expres sion hard, and often compel inversion, big words and obscurity.

Alfred J. Church's version of Homer's Odyssey is simplified for younger readers, but it is certainly not dumbed down. He includes all the main events from Homer's poem and uses beautiful language to boot. I prefer Charles Lamb's version for it's emphasis on Ulysses' adventures, but Church includes a few incidents that Lamb leaves out so I'm glad I read them both. I look forward to reading more of Church's books on mythology.Product details

My copy was not well written, Too many mistakes.
Classic story, the translation was good. The formatting for my kindle app on my android phone worked great. I didn't have any issues with the book.
Great storytelling, keep me interested from beginning to end. Glad I finally got around to reading this classic
Best adventure story ever told, in a nice, well-priced digital edition. If you have never read this or were forced to read it a long time ago, pick it up and read it again. You will be so amazed at the plot and references.
The story is still engrossing and amazing. The roots of Greek culture, religion and society are painted in this odyssey--no wonder the Coen Brother made it into a great movie--"Oh Brother Where Art Thou?"
Tradgedy, Drama and Comedy fill each page.
Ruddy Nectar lubricates Salutations.
Words of Praise beautifully spoken, while timeless Greek Insults, spiced with sarcasm, provide truly thought provoking re-reads.
We use this version with 9th grade honors students and they can comprehend it better than any other version we have worked with! I highly recommend bringing in some Fitzgerald and showing sections of Gareth Hinds' beautiful graphic novel to supplement this version. Thank you, Sir Alfred Church!
